About the Liberty Mutual Insurance Company
Liberty Mutual was founded in 1912 under its original name – the Massachusetts Employees’ Insurance Association, or MEIA. The company was initially formed after the state passed a law a year prior permitting all employers to have some sort of worker’s compensation program for their workers. The first branch opened in 1914, as did the company’s first automotive insurance policy. In 1917, the company named changed to the Liberty Mutual Insurance Company, and the company has grown both organically and through acquisition since en route to becoming one of the largest insurance providers in the nation and world.
As of 2013, Liberty Mutual was the third-largest provider of property and casualty insurance in the United States. The company employs over 50,000 people throughout 900 locations across the globe.
Liberty Mutual offers products under four wings of business – personal insurance, commercial insurance, Liberty International and global specialty. The personal insurance category may offer the likes of auto, homeowners, life, annuity and property and casualty all on the individual scale, as does the commercial insurance category – albeit from a commercial perspective. The International category serves the 18 other countries or markets that Liberty may offer insurance services in and the global specialty category is truly “special,” offering insurance coverage to people in the armed forces and aviation field.
The company makes it easy for policyholders to file a claim. For instance, they may simply go online and file it through Liberty’s claims filing system. Policyholders are typically contacted by a claims specialist within one business day, who then works to walk them through the next steps in resolving the claim. Claims may also be reported over a 24/7 phone line.
Liberty Mutual may offer a variety of discounts for insurance policies, depending on which one the policyholder has. For instance, for an auto policy – in addition to safe driving discounts – policyholders may qualify for the likes of good student discounts, multi-vehicle discounts, new graduate discounts, newly married discounts and even hybrid vehicle discounts. Homeowners may receive discounts for anti-theft devices, remaining claims-free for 3 years or even for recently having had purchased a home. Having multiple difference insurance policies through the company may also result in an overall discount.
