Company History
MetLife history begins in 1863 when New York City businessmen formed the National Union Life and Limb Insurance Company and launched into the areas of life and accident policies in 1864. At the time, a main focus was insuring soldiers and sailors during the Civil War. After a year of policy writing, the company had written minimal policies, incurred a deficit, and ranked last among other New York life insurance companies.
Metropolitan Life Insurance Company emerged five years later when President James R. Dow, along with the board of directors, decided to take the company in one direction. The decision was to discontinue offering casualty insurance and offer only life insurance. With this new focus, the company relaunched itself on March 24, 1868 with six employees housed in a two-room office. With the world not yet connected by telephone, it was a time when sales were generated by word-of-mouth and door-to-door salesmen.
With MetLife President Joseph F. Knapp at the helm, new techniques were put into play to increase the number of industrial policies written each day by agents. Much of the success that followed was due to the company’s hands-on approach – a philosophy still practiced, today.
Now, MetLife Insurance is an established force in the global market with an estimated 90 million clients located in over 50 countries. From the Americas and Asia to Europe, the Middle East and Africa, the company continues to set goals and reach for new horizons.
