History

Founded in 1928, Farmers Insurance began as a small insurance company operating out of a tiny one-room office in downtown Los Angeles. Today, five separate companies comprise the Farmers Insurance Group of Companies, which has become the United States’ largest insurer of homes, vehicles and small businesses. The Farmers Insurance Group of Companies is based in Los Angeles, California, although it is a subsidiary of Zurich Financial Services, which trades on the SWX Swiss Exchange under the symbol ZURN.

Product Offerings

The five companies that comprise the Farmers Insurance Group offer many different insurance products. Farmers offers products like home insurance, auto insurance, renters insurance or life insurance policy. The company also offers insurance policies for motorcycles, recreational vehicles, pets and more.

Business owners may be interested in Farmers’ business insurance offerings, and individuals with significant assets might consider one of the company’s umbrella policies. In addition to its many insurance products, Farmers also helps people with investments for retirement and college. Farmers can assist with setting up an IRA, rolling over a 401(k) or monitoring a 529 College Savings Plan.

Customers who purchase insurance through Farmers Insurance Group can select from many different coverages depending on their insurance needs. For instance, homeowners with a Farmers home insurance policy may be able to insure their belongings and additional structures on their property, as well as the structure of their home. They can also get personal liability protection in case someone is injured on their property. Auto insurance coverage is also customizable through Farmers. Customers can get standard auto protection and add-on coverages like roadside assistance or rental car reimbursement.

Individuals who want more coverage than a single policy affords may be able to purchase an umbrella insurance policy. Umbrella insurance is generally used to provide insurance coverage above and beyond the limits of underlying policies.

For those interested in life insurance, Farmers offers term, whole and universal policies.

The Claims Process

Policyholders with Farmers Insurance can submit their claims one of two ways – either online at Farmers Insurance’s website or by calling Farmers Insurance’s customer service line. Both methods are available to policyholders day or night, 24/7. In the event of severe weather, Farmers also has a Catastrophe Response Team. The Catastrophe Response Team is armed with a fleet of customer care vehicles, which provide immediate claims service to customers and also water, food, telephones, blankets, toys and helpful services to customers and non-customers alike. The catastrophe claims specialists are trained at the University of Farmers and they are equipped with the latest technology to serve their customers efficiently.

Discounts

Farmers Insurance discounts can help policyholders save money in a variety of ways. However, discount availability varies by state. Here are a few ways you may be able to cut your Farmers premium:

  • Bundling home and auto
  • Signing up for automated payments via Electronic Funds Transfers
  • Paying the entire premium up front
  • Switching to Farmers Insurance from another insurance provider

Standard Home Insurance Coverage

Your home insurance protection presents a total package, not just dwelling coverage. Home insurance is more than a sum of its parts, but understanding those parts can help you get the best whole product. These coverage types typically are included in a standard policy
